Back in 2014, during my PhD days working on search problems, we used to primarily care about relevance. Relevance was king: did the result directly address the user's stated information need?
I used to spend years caring about relevance; I don't anymore ๐ฅฒ Relevance is still crucial, but it isn't sufficient.
Now in 2025, the goal of search systems is to empower the model to perform its intended task. For modern AI, the goal of search isn't retrieval, it's readiness. Its goal is to equip the model with exactly what it needs to perform the task at hand.
Search doesnโt just inform -- it empowers. The role of search now evolves from finding to facilitating. From information to implementation. From answers to action.
